REDLANDS, San Bernardino County — October 22, 2026. Building a room addition, renovating a commercial space or planning a new project in Redlands can involve more than one city department. A property owner who starts with only a contractor’s estimate may miss land-use review, site planning, utility work or inspections. The city has a designated One Stop Permit Center intended to coordinate building, planning and engineering review.
What the One Stop Permit Center does
According to the City of Redlands, the center offers one location for applicants to submit and coordinate plans and projects with Building and Safety, Planning and Engineering staff. Some projects also require Fire Department permits or review by Municipal Utilities and Engineering. The city’s online center provides links by permit type as well as separate inspection scheduling instructions.
Approval to use land is not the same as a building permit
Before investing in design work or construction materials, residents should check whether their intended use is permitted at the property. The city’s Development and Entitlement Process says a development application can require an application form, specific plans or drawings, associated documents and fees. A review for an allowed land use, such as a discretionary entitlement, is a separate question from whether a construction plan satisfies the building code.
Check before you buy or sign
- Identify the exact parcel and jurisdiction. A postal address alone does not prove the property is within Redlands city limits.
- Describe the intended project. A new home, converted garage, remodel, commercial use and subdivision can follow different pathways.
- Ask which approvals apply. Zoning, planning, building, engineering and fire requirements are not interchangeable.
- Check fees and review timing. An application does not become an approval merely because documents were submitted.
- Keep inspection records. A permit issued before construction may still require later inspection and final sign-off.
Where to ask the city
The Redlands One Stop Permit Center lists 35 Cajon Street, Suite 15-A and telephone 909-798-7551. Office schedules include alternating Friday closures, so check the city’s posted calendar before visiting. Planning staff also publish separate planning and zoning contacts.
What is not yet known
California58 has not inspected or evaluated any individual Redlands parcel, verified the cost to build a specific house or promised approval for a particular permit. The proper next step is an address-specific answer from the city, preferably in writing. Send documented local planning issues to Redlands News.
